United Methodists Respond to Hurricane Ida

Category 4 Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on August 29, the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. UMCOR (The United Methodist Committee on Relief) is working with conference disaster response coordinators to assess the storm’s impact and respond to immediate needs. UMCOR has already awarded an initial solidarity grant to the Louisiana Conference.

In response to the incredible devastation and destruction in the wake of Hurricane Ida, Minnesota United Methodists are invited to be a part of the relief effort.  This is our opportunity to assist those whose lives have been upturned in a very simple and practical way: cleaning buckets.

These buckets are filled with supplies needed as people try to clean out homes damaged by the hurricane such as household cleaner, dish soap, laundry detergent, clothesline and clothes pins.  You get the idea.

We are hoping Wesley UMC will be able to provide the supplies for at least ten cleaning buckets.  Here is the list of supplies for the bucket:

· One 32-64 oz. bottle liquid laundry detergent
· One 16-40 oz. bottle liquid concentrate household cleaner (no spray bottles)
· One 16-34 oz. bottle liquid dish soap
· One 4-8 oz. pump spray air freshener
· one 6-14 oz. pump spray insect repellent (or pack of 10-20 wipes)  (pump spray bottles must have protective covers)
· One scrub brush, with or without handle
· 18 re-usable cleaning wipes (no terrycloth, microfiber or paper towels)
· Five scouring pads (no stainless steel or pads with soap in them)
· 36-50 clothespins
· One 50-100 ft. clothesline
· 24 roll of heavy duty trash bags (33-45 gallon sizes
· Five N95 particulate respirator dust masks
· Two pairs kitchen gloves (durable for multiple uses)
· One pair work gloves (cotton with leather palm or all leather)

You are invited to use this online list to keep track of what you have donated (or plan to donate).

You can simply make a donation for the cleaning bucket supplies toward the purchase of the items or purchase any of the items mentioned above and drop them off at the church on Sunday, September 5 or 12.  You can also contact either Heather Carpenter (615-385-1290) or the church office (507-452-6783) if you have items to contribute but aren’t able to bring them to church on a Sunday.  We must receive all contributions no later than September 15 in order to have time to assemble the bucket and get it to the collection site.
